Meet the co-founders
Erin Whelan, CPDT-KA, CSAP-BC
&
Maddie Messina, MA, ACAAB, CSAP-BC, FFCP
After years building successful dog training businesses, Erin and Maddie kept hearing the same thing from their clients: qualified, trustworthy dog care was hard to find. So they put their heads together and created Borough Hounds — thoughtful care built the way they'd want it for their own dogs.
Their standard is simple: clients don't want someone who just shows up to walk the dog. They want knowledgeable, quick-thinking handlers who treat every dog like their own.
Join the Team
Borough Hounds was built by two certified dog trainers who believe every dog deserves compassionate, educated handlers who truly care about the dog in front of them. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to, and we’re looking for people who share it. We’re hiring part-time Pet Care Professionals in Jersey City and Hoboken for Adventures, our small-group park hikes, as well as neighborhood walks, and drop-in visits,
Who This Role is For:
You pay close attention to how dogs are feeling, so you can recognize when one is uneasy before things escalate.
You teach with treats, praise, and clear cues, and you’re happy to change your route if it helps a dog avoid a known trigger.
You’re comfortable working on your own, making sound decisions in the field, and knowing when it’s time to bring in management.
You check the details and plan ahead, which allows you to step in before a small issue becomes a bigger problem.
You’re courteous to everyone you meet along the way, from clients to doormen and neighbors, and you leave each home the way you found it.
This Role Might Not Be Right for You If…
You need full-time hours or benefits right now, as this is a part-time role and hours will build as our business grows.
You need a predictable schedule, since much of our work happens during the weekday daytime and we expect some weekend and holiday demand.
You’d rather not work in bad weather, because our services run rain or shine unless management cancels for unsafe conditions.
You rely on corrections to manage behavior, as we don’t allow physical punishment, yelling, leash yanks, or pushing a dog into position.
You dislike using your phone or may be uncomfortable navigating an app-based schedule with timers and clock-in/out tracking
Requirements for the Role:
For all roles:
You have at least one year of professional pet care experience, such as dog walking, sitting, training, grooming, daycare, or veterinary work.
You understand dog body language, including how to recognize fear and the signs that a dog may bite.
You’re committed to handling every dog with positive reinforcement.
You can lift up to 50 pounds and stay active outdoors in all kinds of weather.
You’re based in Jersey City or Hoboken and have reliable transportation.
You have a smartphone with reliable data, which you’ll use for GPS tracking, client updates, and scheduling.
You’re authorized to work in the US and can pass a background check before your first shift.
You can provide two professional references and one personal reference.
For Adventures drivers:
You have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record, which we’ll confirm with a motor vehicle records check.
Strongly preferred:
You have experience managing groups of dogs, whether through daycare, pack walks, or group training.
You hold a pet first aid/CPR certification or are working toward one.
You can share a Rover or Wag profile or a pet care social media account that shows your work.
